LOS ANGELES, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Hollywood's Sony Pictures Classics says it has delayed the release of its film "Foxcatcher," starring Steve Carell and Channing Tatum, until next year.

"SPC supports the decision of the filmmakers to allow for more time to finish the film," the studio said in a statement Thursday.

Variety said the decision to delay the release date was made in part because the field of awards contenders is particularly fierce this year and Sony believes the film may do better in 2014.

Directed by Bennett Miller, the movie is inspired by the true story of how the relationship of Olympic wrestling champion brothers Mark and Dave Schultz have with John du Pont, heir to the du Pont Chemical fortune, led to murder, Variety said.
