Benedict Cumberbatch set for BAFTA LA honor

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- The British Academy of Film and Television Arts Los Angeles says it will honor actor Benedict Cumberbatch at its Britannia Awards ceremony this fall.

Cumberbatch, 37, is to receive the Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year at the event, which is to take place Nov. 9 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. The prize presentation will be broadcast on BBC America Nov. 10.

"Benedict Cumberbatch has had a remarkable year, and as one of the United Kingdom's leading talents he truly exemplifies the continued respect that British talents have garnered around the globe," Gary Dartnall, chairman of BAFTA Los Angeles, said in a statement Thursday. "Masterfully performing in TV, film and theater and never failing to astound us with his talent and versatility, BAFTA Los Angeles is proud to honor Benedict as our British Artist of the Year."

"The brilliance, intelligence and charisma of rising star Benedict Cumberbatch has secured his place among the acclaimed British actors who have commanded the screen over the years," said Britannia Award Co-Chairs Rebecca Segal and Deborah Kolar in a joint statement.

Cumberbatch is best known for his work in British TV dramas and miniseries, particularly "Sherlock" for which he plays the titular private detective. His film credits include "War Horse," "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" and "Star Trek Into the Darkness."
