'The Wolverine' is No. 1 at U.S. box office with $55 million

HOLLYWOOD, July 28 (UPI) -- "The Wolverine" was No. 1 at U.S. movie theaters, gross $55 million in its debut weekend, box-office estimates indicated.

Distributor 20th Century Fox had projected a $60 million opening weekend gross for the latest Marvel Comics movie adaptation, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday.

"The Wolverine" opened with $86.1 million in overseas markets, the largest international opening in Marvel's "X-Men" film series, the Times said.

"The Conjuring" grossed an estimated $22.1 million, for a two-week total of $83. 9 million, Box Office Mojo said.

The animated "Despicable Me" was No. 3 with an estimated $16 million, running its four-week total to $306.4 million.

Another animated entry, "Turbo," took in $13.3 million, running its three-week total to $55.8 million. "Grown Ups 2" was No. 5 with $11.5 million and a three-week total of $80 million.

The rest of the Top 10 were: "Red 2" ($9.4 million); "Pacific Rim" ($7.5 million); "The Heat" ($6.8 million); "R.I.P.D." ($5.9 million) and "Fruitvale Station" ($4.7 million).
