Lucasfilm says J.J. Abrams is still directing 'Star Wars'

LOS ANGELES, July 23 (UPI) -- Lucasfilm is shooting down rumors claiming Hollywood filmmaker J.J. Abrams has decided not to direct the next "Star Wars" film as planned.

"There is no truth to the rumor," Lucasfilm said in a statement issued to the Los Angeles Times Monday. "J.J. is having a great time working on the script and is looking forward to going into production next year."

Set for release in 2015, "Star Wars: Episode VII" is being written by Michael Arndt, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of "Little Miss Sunshine" and "Toy Story 3."

Abrams is the co-creator of the iconic TV show "Lost," as well as two "Star Trek" movies.
