LOS ANGELES, July 16 (UPI) -- Silver Pictures and Studiocanal said Tuesday principal photography has begun in Europe on the action thriller "The Gunman."

Starring Sean Penn, Javier Bardem, Idris Elba, Ray Winstone, Mark Rylance and Jasmine Trinca, the film is being directed by French filmmaker Pierre Morel.

It was written by Peter Travis and is based on the novel "The Prone Gunman" by Jean-Patrick Manchette. The movie is being shot mainly in Barcelona and London.

"Penn stars as Jim Terrier, an international operative who is betrayed by the organization he worked for, and must go on the run in a relentless game of cat and mouse across Europe," a synopsis said.
