LOS ANGELES, June 20 (UPI) -- Robert Downey Jr. has signed on to play billionaire inventor Tony Stark and his alter-ego Iron Man in two more "Avengers" films, Marvel announced Thursday.

Downey has already played the iconic role in three "Iron Man" blockbusters and the super-powered ensemble picture "The Avengers," written and directed by Joss Whedon.

Whedon is writing and will direct "The Avengers 2," due in theaters in 2015.
