MOSCOW, June 20 (UPI) -- French actor Gerard Depardieu has signed on to star in the big-screen comedy "Sports Without Borders," the film's producers said Thursday.

The actor will play the head of Russia's men's alpine ski team in the movie, which is set during the Sochi 2014 Olympics, production company Stella told RIA Novosti.

Otto Retzer and Alexander Lomakin are directing the $4 million, Russian-Austrian co-production.

Depardieu obtained a Russian passport in January after President Vladimir Putin invited him to be a citizen when he left France in protest of a proposed 75 percent tax on wealthy residents.
