'The Purge' is No. 1 at U.S. box office, 'The Internship' stumbles

LOS ANGELES, June 9 (UPI) -- The sci-fi thriller "The Purge," made for about $3 million, grossed an estimated $36.3 million in its opening weekend to finish No. 1 at the U.S. box office.

The more heavily promoted Vince Vaughn-Owen Wilson comedy, "The Internship," opened in fourth place, grossing just $18.1 million, Box Office Mojo said.

"Fast & Furious 6," which was No. 1 in its first two weeks in release, took in $19.7 million to run its overall domestic take to $202.9 million and finish second -- ahead of the crime-thriller "Now You See Me," which grossed $19.5 million in its second weekend in theaters.

The animated "Epic," was No. 5 with $12.1 million and a three-week total of $84.1 million.

"Star Trek Into Darkness" was No. 6 with $11.7 million and a four-week total of $200.1 million. The Will Smith adventure "After Earth" was No. 7 with $11.2 million and a three-week total of just $46.5 million.

"The Hangover Part III" ($7.3 million), "Iron Man 3" $5.7 million) and "The Great Gatsby (2013)" ($4.2 million" rounded up the top 10.

"Iron Man 3" has taken in a estimated $394.3 million in six weeks in U.S. release.
