LONDON, June 3 (UPI) -- Angelina Jolie attended the London premiere of partner Brad Pitt's new movie after recently undergoing a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery.

The 37-year-old mother of six children chronicled in an op-ed piece for The New York Times last month her decision to have the preventative operations after she learned she carried a gene that predisposed her to breast and ovarian cancers.

Jolie's mother died of ovarian cancer in 2007 at the age of 56. The actress' maternal aunt died of breast cancer at 61 late last month.

Jolie looked stunning in a long, black evening gown as she walked the red carpet for this past weekend's "World War Z" gala, alongside her fiance. The event marked her first high-profile, public appearance since she began treatment several months ago.

"That's who I fell in love with from the very beginning," Pitt told E! of Jolie's brave decision to have the operations in an effort to protect her health. "The person that you see now is the person that I've always known and she's heroic and incredibly strong and will attack any problem head-on and make it work."

Told it also helps to have a great partner like him by her side, Pitt smiled and replied: "Well, I think so. I like to think so. We'll see what she says."
