HOLLYWOOD, June 1 (UPI) -- Former "Doctor Who" star Karen Gillan is the latest to join the cast of "Guardians of the Galaxy," The Hollywood Reporter said.

The Scottish actress joins Glenn Close, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Lee Pace and Michael Rooker in Marvel Studios' space adventure movie, The Hollywood Reporter said Friday.

The film is slotted for a late-June shoot in Britain with James Gunn directing.

Gillan is to play the lead female villain in the film, the entertainment industry publication reported.

Gillan previously played the Doctor's companion in three seasons of the BBC hit, "Doctor Who." Her character appeared in apps, books and video games.
