LOS ANGELES, May 30 (UPI) -- Johnny Depp has quit "Black Mass," Barry Levinson's Whitey Bulger bio-picture, after he was asked to take a pay cut, The Hollywood Reporter said.

Depp was to have been paid his usual $20 million salary, but was asked to take $10 million instead after the movie's producers secured less financing than expected at the Cannes Film Festival, sources told the entertainment industry trade newspaper.

The "Pirates of the Caribbean" star officially bowed out of playing infamous Boston gangster Bulger Wednesday, The Hollywood Reporter said.

Depp will be seen in "The Lone Ranger" this summer.
