PARIS, May 24 (UPI) -- French prosecutors want Gerard Depardieu's driver's license suspended after the actor failed to appear for a fourth time at a hearing on a drunken driving case.

Depardieu's lawyer, Eric de Caumont, said the actor did not attend Friday's hearing because he is filming a movie in Chechnya, Radio France Internationale reported.

De Caumont said Depardieu admits responsibility for his behavior in the 2012 case, but he disputes his client was as intoxicated as police said he was at the time he fell off his motorcycle.

Depardieu, who has since accepted Russian citizenship, must appear in person in the Paris court if he wants to plead guilty to the driving under the influence charge, officials said.

Prosecutors requested Friday Depardieu be ordered to pay $5,200 and have his driver's license suspended for 10 months, RFI said.

The maximum penalty for the crime is $5,800 and as much as two years in prison.
