'Death Wish' director Michael Winner dead at 77

LONDON, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- British film director Michael Winner has died in his London home after a battle with liver disease, his wife Geraldine said. He was 77.

The Daily Telegraph confirmed his death Monday.

Winner helmed more than 30 films, including installments of the "Death Wish" franchise, starring Charles Bronson. His other film credits included "The Big Sleep," "The Wicked Lady," "The Jokers," "I'll Never Forget What's 'is Name," "Chato's Land" and "The Nightcomers."

The Telegraph said he had been ill for some time and was nursed by his wife, a former dancer whom he met 55 years ago and married in 2011.

"Michael was a wonderful man -- brilliant, funny and generous. A light has gone out in my life," Geraldine Winner said in a statement to the newspaper.
