'Great Gatsby' gets new release date

BURBANK, Calif., Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Director Baz Luhrmann's 3D adaptation of "The Great Gatsby" will be released in theaters next summer, Hollywood's Warner Bros. Pictures said Monday.

The studio's collaboration with Village Roadshow Pictures was initially set for a Christmas release.

The schedule change was made by Dan Fellman, president of domestic distribution, and Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, president of international distribution for Warner Bros. Pictures.

Set in 1920s New York and based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel of the same name, the movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire.

"Based on what we've seen, Baz Luhrmann's incredible work is all we anticipated and so much more. It truly brings Fitzgerald's American classic to life in a completely immersive, visually stunning and exciting way. We think moviegoers of all ages are going to embrace it, and it makes sense to ensure this unique film reaches the largest audience possible," Fellman said in a statement.

Kwan Vandenberg said: "Baz is known for being innovative, but with this film he has done something completely unexpected -- making it in 3D -- while capturing the emotion, the intimacy, the power and the spectacle of the time. The responses we've had to some of the early sneak peeks have been phenomenal, and we think 'The Great Gatsby' will be the perfect summer movie around the world."

DiCaprio fans will still get to see the actor on the big screen during the winter holidays, however. He is part of the ensemble of Quentin Tarantino's 19th century epic "Django Unchained," which is set for a Dec. 25 release.
