TORONTO, July 25 (UPI) -- Rian Johnson's futuristic thriller "Looper," starring Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, has been selected to open the 37th Toronto International Film Festival, organizers announced.

"Rian Johnson is a film auteur known for combining different genres to give his projects an original spin," The Hollywood Reporter quoted festival director and chief executive officer Piers Handling as saying Tuesday.

Co-starring Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, Noah Segan, Piper Perabo and Jeff Daniels, the action movie from TriStar Pictures, FilmDistrict and Endgame Entertainment is set to screen Sept. 6.

It is to open in North American theaters Sept. 28.

Johnson showed his films "The Brothers Bloom" and "Brick" at previous editions of the festival.
