LOS ANGELES, July 23 (UPI) -- The latest Batman film, "The Dark Knight Rises," earned nearly $161 million at the North American box office when it opened this weekend, receipts show.

The weekly film earnings were reported Monday instead of the usual Sunday out of respect for the victims of the Colorado movie theater massacre.

A 24-year-old man is to be charged next week with killing 12 people and wounding dozens of others when he opened fire in an Aurora movie house where the third and final installment in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy was screening at midnight Friday.

Box Office Mojo said "Ice Age: Continental Drift" was No. 2 with $20 million, "The Amazing Spider-Man" was No. 3 with $11 million, "Ted" was No. 4 with $10 million and "Brave" was No. 5 with $6 million.

Rounding out the top tier are "Magic Mike" at No. 6 with $4 million, "Savages" at No. 7 with $3 million, "Tyler Perry's Madea's Witness Protection" at No. 8 with $2 million, "Moonrise Kingdom" at No. 9 with $1.8 million and "To Rome with Love" at No. 10 with $1.4 million.

The Hollywood Reporter said "The Dark Knight Rises" had the biggest opening ever for a non-3-D movie and the third-biggest opening of all time behind 3-D offerings "The Avengers" with $207 million and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2" with $169.2 million.
