LOS ANGELES, June 6 (UPI) -- Amanda Bynes' lawyer entered a not guilty plea on the Hollywood actress' behalf Wednesday for a DUI charge, People.com said.

The Los Angeles City Attorney's Office announced Tuesday the "Hairspray" and "What a Girl Wants" star had been charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

She was arrested April 6 after she allegedly hit a police cruiser she was trying to pass at around 3 a.m.

The complaint against Bynes said the 26-year-old actress refused a peace officer's request to submit to and/or complete a chemical test to determine how much -- if any -- substance was in her system.

Bynes repeatedly has denied drinking or using drugs before getting behind the wheel the night in question.

People.com said Wednesday she faces a maximum penalty as a first-time offender of 48 hours in jail, three years probation and a nine-month alcohol program, if convicted. She could also lose her driver's license for a year.
