MEXICO CITY, June 3 (UPI) -- Writer-director Emilio Portes' sophomore feature "Pastorela" made a big splash at Mexico's 54th Ariel Awards, winning seven, including best picture.

Portes also won best director at the Saturday awards ceremony in Mexico City, as well as best original screenplay, The Hollywood Reporter reported.

Thriller "Dias de Gracia," ("Days of Grace"), picked up eight trophies, including best first work to director Everado Gout and best actor for Tenoch Huerta.

Gerardo Naranjo's action film, "Miss Bala," which was Mexico's selection for the foreign-language Academy Awards in the United States, walked away empty-handed. It was nominated for best picture and best director, THR reported.

The Ariel for best documentary went to Tatiana Huezo's "El Lugar Mas Pequeno," ("The Tiniest Place"), and best picture in the Ibero-American category went to wartime saga "Pa Negre," ("Black Bread").
