'Avengers' still reigns atop box office

LOS ANGELES, May 20 (UPI) -- "Marvel's The Avengers" took the No. 1 spot at the U.S. box office for the third straight weekend with $55.05 million in receipts.

The film stars Robert Downey Jr. and an ensemble company. Box Office Mojo reports the record-breaking film has reached $1 billion in receipts worldwide.

"Battleship" was a distant No. 2, even with a healthy $25.3 million in receipts.

All studio estimates of gross U.S. box office receipts are via Box Office Mojo.

"The Dictator" was third with more than $17.41 million; "Dark Shadows" fourth with $12.77 million; "What to Expect When You're Expecting" fifth with $10.5 million; "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" sixth with $3.25 million; "The Hunger Games" seventh with $3 million; "Think Like a Man" eighth with $2.7 million; "The Lucky One" ninth with more than $1.76 million.

"The Pirates! Band of Misfits" was 10th with $1.45 million.
