LOS ANGELES, May 5 (UPI) -- Disney and Marvel Studios' superhero ensemble picture "The Avengers" grossed $80.5 million Friday in North America, box-office receipts show.

The Hollywood Reporter said Saturday the film has earned $334.3 million internationally for a global total of $414.8 million.

Directed by Joss Whedon and starring Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson, the movie had the second-biggest single day of all time at the domestic box office behind last summer's "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2," which earned $91.1 million on its first day, the entertainment industry trade newspaper said.
