LOS ANGELES, April 2 (UPI) -- U.S. television star Ashton Kutcher is to play late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in director Joshua Michael Stern's independent film "Jobs," Variety reported.

Kutcher is best known for his work on the sitcoms "Two and a Half Men" and "That 70s Show," and the films "Spread" and "Bobby."

Variety said Matt Whiteley wrote the screenplay for "Jobs," which is to start production in May.

Jobs, the computer genius who helped revolutionize the communication and entertainment industries, died of cancer last October. He was 56.
