CANNES, France, March 9 (UPI) -- Wes Anderson's summer-camp comedy "Moonrise Kingdom" is to open the 65th Cannes Film Festival, organizers said Friday.

The movie, which Anderson directed and co-wrote with Roman Coppola, stars Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray and Frances McDormand. It is to premiere at the festival May 16 and will open May 25 in theaters in the United States.

"Wes Anderson is one of the rising powers of American cinema, to which he brings a highly personal touch, particularly in 'Moonrise Kingdom,' which once again is a testimony to the creative freedom in which he continues to evolve. Sensitive and independent, this admirer of Fellini and Renoir is also in his own right a brilliant and inventive filmmaker," said the festival's artistic director, Thierry Fremaux.

Anderson's other films include "The Fantastic Mr. Fox," "The Darjeeling Limited, "The Royal Tenenbaums" and "Rushmore."
