LOS ANGELES, March 6 (UPI) -- U.S. filmmaker and occasional actor Woody Allen has signed up for a role in writer-director John Turturro's movie "Fading Gigolo," Variety said.

Allen hasn't acted in someone else's project since he appeared in Alfonso Arau's 2000 comedy "Picking Up the Pieces." Allen last starred in his own big-screen comedy "Scoop" in 2006.

"Fading Gigolo" also will co-star Sofia Vergara and Sharon Stone, the entertainment industry trade newspaper reported.

Scheduled to start shooting in April in New York, the film casts Turturro, 55, and Allen, 76, as cash-strapped best friends who go into the gigolo business, Variety said.
