'Tintin' leads with 6 nods for FX awards

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Hollywood's Visual Effects Society nominated Steven Spielberg's animated film "The Adventures of Tintin" for a leading six awards Monday.

The movie about an intrepid young reporter solving mysteries in 1930s Europe is up for Outstanding Virtual Cinematography in an Animated Feature Motion Picture, Outstanding Visual Effects in an Animated Feature Motion Picture and Outstanding Animated Character in an Animated Feature Motion Picture for the title character Tintin. The society also recognized three separate scenes from the film in the category Outstanding Created Environment in an Animated Feature Motion Picture.

The nominees for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture are

"Captain America: The First Avenger," "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2," "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" and "Transformers: Dark of the Moon."

In the running for Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Feature Motion Picture are "Anonymous,"

"Hugo," "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" and

"War Horse."

Nominated for Outstanding Visual Effects in an Animated Feature Motion Picture are "Arthur Christmas," "Kung Fu Panda 2," "Puss In Boots," "Rango" and "The Adventures of Tintin."

Competing for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Broadcast Series are "Falling Skies," "Fringe," "Planet Dinosaur," "Terra Nova" and "The Bomber."

Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Broadcast Program are "Boardwalk Empire," "Bones,"

"Breaking Bad," "Game of Thrones" and "Pan Am."

"The standard of the creative work that is being considered this year is unbelievably high across all categories," Jeffrey A. Okun, the society's chairman, said in a statement Monday. "The judges faced a huge challenge because all of the work was so far above the norm. We're honored to have the opportunity to focus the spotlight on the outstanding work that has contributed to some of the highest grossing films and broadcast projects of all time."

The 10th annual VES Awards ceremony is to take place Feb. 7 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and will air exclusively on ReelzChannel.
