LONDON, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Queen Elizabeth II has made actress Helena Bonham Carter a commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

Carter, 45, was nominated for an Oscar last year for her portrayal of the queen's mother in "The King's Speech."

The actress was among those given honorary titles at the queen's New Year Honors ceremony in London as part of an order of chivalry established in 1917 to honor

people's extraordinary achievements in their respective fields.

"I am wondering does it mean I get to command?" the BBC quoted Carter as joking.

"Because, at the moment, it's my 4-year-old daughter who does the commanding in our household," she said. "Must inform her of the change in situation."

Carter's film credits include the Harry Potter franchise, "Alice in Wonderland," "Sweeney Todd," "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," "Big Fish," "Howard's End," "Room with a View" and "Lady Jane." She has two children with her longtime partner, director Tim Burton.

Actor Ronnie Corbett, poet Dannie Abse, Royal Court Theatre chairman Anthony Burton, writer and broadcaster Clive James, music producer Steve Lillywhite and Scottish National Portrait Gallery director James Holloway also were given commander status in the Most Excellent Order, the BBC said.
