265 films eligible for Best Picture Oscar

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Hollywood's Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences says 265 feature films are in contention for the 2011 Best Picture Oscar.

To be eligible for 84th Academy Awards consideration, movies must open in a commercial motion-picture theater in Los Angeles County by midnight, Dec. 31, and begin a minimum run of seven consecutive days.

Oscar nominations are to be announced Jan. 24. Between five and 10 films will make the shortlist for Best Picture.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2011 are to be presented Feb. 26 at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center. The ceremony will be televised live on ABC.

The 2010 Best Picture winner was "The King's Speech."
