New York Web critics honor 'Artist'

NEW YORK, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- New York Film Critics Online has voted "The Artist" the Best Picture of 2011 and Michael Hazanavicius Best Director for helming it.

The movie also won the group's award for Best Use of Music.

Michael Shannon picked up the prize for Best Actor for "Take Shelter" and Meryl Streep the Best Actress accolade for for "The Iron Lady."

Albert Brooks was named Best Supporting Actor for "Drive" and Melissa McCarthy Best Supporting Actress for "Bridesmaids," which also scooped up the Best Ensemble title.

"The Tree of Life" was honored with the Best Cinematography award, while Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash shared the Best Screenplay prize for "The Descendants."

"A Separation" was declared Best Foreign Language Film, "Cave of Forgotten Dreams" deemed Best Documentary and "The Adventures of Tintin" named Best Animated Feature.

Mentioned on NYFCO's list of the year's best films are "The Descendants," "Drive," "The Help," "Hugo," "Melancholia," "Midnight in Paris," "Take Shelter," "The Tree of Life" and "War Horse."
