BALTIMORE, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- About 800 people gathered at Baltimore's Johns Hopkins University to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Barry Levinson's 1982 movie "Diner."

Among those in attendance Saturday night were Daniel Stern, Ellen Barkin and Michael Tucker, whose careers were jump-started by their starring roles in the film, The Baltimore Sun reported.

"Barry always knew what he wanted, and how to get it out of us," Stern said. "And when you have someone like that who is your leader, you stand behind him."

Levinson, a Baltimore native who is currently gearing up for a Broadway musical production of the 1982 film, spoke of the loose atmosphere he kept on set and how the executives at MGM were expecting action and "Porky's" style comedy, not observational humor.

"I think 'Diner' changed the culture," said Barkin. "It really changed what it meant to be funny. I'm intensely proud to have been part of it."
