New York critics praise 'The Artist'

NEW YORK, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- The New York Film Critics Circle declared "The Artist" the Best Picture of 2011.

Michel Hazanavicius, who directed the black-and-white silent movie, also won the award for Best Director.

Brad Pitt picked up the Best Actor prize for his work in "Moneyball" and "The Tree of Life," while Meryl Streep was honored as Best Actress for "The Iron Lady."

Albert Brooks garnered the gong for Best Supporting Actor for "Drive" and Jessica Chastain was recognized as Best Supporting Actress for her performances in "The Tree of Life," "The Help" and "Take Shelter."

"The Tree of Life" earned the Best Cinematography accolade, and Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin share the Best Screenplay prize for penning "Moneyball."

"A Separation" was named Best Foreign Language Film, "Margin Call" won the award for Best First Feature and "Cave of Forgotten Dreams" was hailed as Best Non-Fiction Film.
