Filmmaker still optimistic about Egypt

CAIRO, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- American filmmaker Jehane Noujaim says she is still hopeful her native Egypt is on the right track even after she was arrested in the chaos of Tahrir Square.

Noujaim told NBC News she was none the worse for wear after her 36-hour detention and did not want to see Egypt's political development derailed by the new clashes between the public and the military.

"These changes take time and I don't want to put this gigantic blame on the poor kids in the police or the poor kids in the army," Noujaim said. "My hope is that ... people all around Egypt will soon be able to have systems of law in place, which really do protect their rights."

Noujaim's optimism was supported by her overall encounters with the troops in Cairo during last week's protests.

"Whereas the rest of the military had been very helpful in getting us out of the situation, this particular military guy was absolutely not," she said.
