LONDON, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- The 23rd film in the series about British secret agent James Bond will be called "Skyfall," producers said.

Eon Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment announced the title of the film Thursday and said production on it is set to begin Nov. 7.

Sam Mendes is to direct the movie, starring Daniel Craig as Bond, producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said. Craig previously played the secret agent in "Casino Royale" and "Quantum of Solace."

"Skyfall" is scheduled for release in the United Kingdom and Ireland Oct. 26, 2012 and in North America Nov. 9, 2012. Its cast will also include Javier Bardem, Judi Dench, Naomie Harris, Berenice Marlohe, Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney and Ben Whishaw.

In the film, "Bond's loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost," a synopsis said.

"We're so delighted to have Sam Mendes direct 'Skyfall' and be working once again with Daniel Craig. We've a great script, an extraordinary cast and an incredibly talented creative team for this latest James Bond adventure," Wilson and Broccoli said in a joint statement.
