Hathaway to star in 'Les Miserables'

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- U.S. actress Anne Hathaway is to join her fellow former Oscar host Hugh Jackman in a new big-screen adaptation of "Les Miserables," the film's producers said.

Hathaway is to play tragic Fantine to Hugh Jackman's heroic Jean Valjean and Russell Crowe's relentless Inspector Javert in the latest incarnation of Victor Hugo's novel, The Hollywood Reporter said.

Tom Hooper, director of "The King's Speech," is helming the movie, which is set for theatrical release Dec. 7, 2012.

Hathaway sang a spoof of "On My Own," a song from the stage musical version of "Les Miserables," to audience member Jackman at this year's Oscars ceremony for which she served as co-host with James Franco. Throughout the number, she teased Jackman about declining to perform with her on stage after she danced with him during a previous Oscar telecast when he was host.
