LOS ANGELES, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Paul Dano is to play Karl Rove, a controversial senior adviser to former U.S. President George W. Bush, in "College Republicans," the film's producer said.

TheWrap.com said Richard Linklater is set to direct the movie, which is to begin shooting in Texas in November.

Producer Maya Browne told the Web site Tuesday she is financing the film through her Bratt Entertainment production company, while Ginger Sledge also is producing.

Browne said the film "is about when Karl Rove and Lee Atwater first met, which is when Karl Rove ran for president of the College Republicans, and that's when they sort of discovered dirty tricks. It's interesting to see them take that journey together."

Linklater's film credits include "A Scanner Darkly," "Before Sunset," "Slacker" and "Dazed and Confused."

Dano has appeared in "Cowboys & Aliens," "There Will Be Blood" and "Little Miss Sunshine."
