Ticket revenues for 3-D films surge

HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Reports from box offices around the world indicate 3-D movies are catching on with the ticket-buying public.

A report released by IHS Screen Digest this week concludes that box office revenues for 3-D films more than doubled last year to $6.1 billion. That compares to $2.5 billion in 2009 and accounted for 19.3 percent of the global box office.

North America accounted for about $2 billion in revenue and 36.1 percent of ticket sales for 3-D movies while international receipts tripled from the previous year.

"This run of exceptional growth in international markets has been instrumental in achieving a current worldwide total in excess of 30,000 3-D screens," said HIS senior analyst Charlotte Jones. "At least one in four of the world's screens is now 3-D-capable."

The Hollywood Reporter said Saturday the study found that Japan was the second-largest 3-D market thanks to Hollywood releases such as "Avatar," "Toy Story 3" and the Japanese production "Umizaro 3."

China and Mexico had the highest ticket premiums in the world although Mexico also had the lowest average ticket price for a 3-D picture.
