The role was played in previous Superman flicks by Jackie Cooper and Frank Langella.

Fishburne recently left TV's "CSI" after two seasons. His film credits include "Mystic River," the "Matrix" trilogy, "What's Love Got to Do with It" and "Apocalypse Now."

Zack Snyder is directing "Man of Steel," which stars Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent and Diane Lane as Martha Kent. It is slated for a 2013 theatrical release.
