LOS ANGELES, July 18 (UPI) -- Hollywood actor Tom Cruise has signed on to play Jack Reacher in "One Shot," a big-screen adaptation of Lee Child's best-selling book series, Deadline reported.

Cruise will play a former military policeman-turned-drifter in the thriller, which is to begin shooting this fall, the entertainment news Web site said.

Christopher McQuarrie, with whom Cruise worked on "Valkyrie," is helming "One Shot."
