Online sales of Harry Potter tickets surge

NEW YORK, July 17 (UPI) -- People lined up online in record numbers for tickets to the new Harry Potter movie, the Web site MovieTickets.com said Sunday.

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows; Part 2" set a new mark for online advanced ticket sales with more than twice the number of sales for any other film so far this year.

CEO Joel Cohen said in a written statement that Harry Potter has been particularly popular with fans who use his service. "The popularity and accessibility of MovieTickets.com's online ticketing has grown with the fervor and demand for Harry Potter," he said.

Cohen said 40 percent of the top 10 movies are Potter pictures. Also on the list are "Twilight" and "Star Wars" titles along with the Batman movie "The Dark Knight."

The statement did not include the number of tickets sold for "Deathly Hallows; Part 2"; however single-day sales topped the previous mark set by "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" in 2009 by 9.5 percent.
