Miranda hearing held in Locane crash case

SOMERVILLE, N.J., July 12 (UPI) -- Actress Amy Locane-Bovenizer didn't seem to grasp the seriousness of the fatal car crash she allegedly caused, a New Jersey police officer has testified.

Locane-Bovenizer, 39, is charged with aggravated manslaughter for allegedly killing a 60-year-old female passenger in another car while driving drunk last year.

The Courier News of Somerville, N.J., reported a police officer at the scene testified in a pretrial hearing in the case Monday that Locane-Bovenizer appeared happy and laughed moments after the collision, then did not seem to understand why they put her in an ambulance and placed a brace on her neck.

The hearing is to help a judge determine whether statements the defendant made to police after the crash -- particularly that she drank four glasses of wine and beer before it occurred -- are admissible at trial, the newspaper said. The Miranda hearing is to continue this week.

Locane-Bovenizer is best known for her work in the movies "Cry-Baby" and "School Ties," as well as in the TV show "Melrose Place."
