MIAMI BEACH, Fla., July 4 (UPI) -- Tom Cruise celebrated his 49th birthday with a surprise party thrown by wife Katie Holmes at an exclusive Miami Beach hotel.

Cruise is shooting the movie version of the glam metal musical "Rock of Ages" in Miami, and the 40-person Italian dinner took place Saturday at the members-only Soho Beach House, WTVJ-TV reported, citing the New York Post.

Holmes wore a polka dot sundress and large diamond ring, Cruise sported a white shirt and fedora, and their 5-year-old daughter Suri graced a gray striped dress and gold sandals, the Daily Mail said.

Cruise's children from his marriage to Nicole Kidman, Isabella and Connor, also were on hand, the Post reported.

Holmes, 32, earlier walked the red carpet of the Los Angeles Film Festival for the premiere of her horror movie "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark," directed by Guillermo del Toro, which opens Aug. 26.
