LOS ANGELES, July 4 (UPI) -- "Bridesmaids" has won the distinction of becoming the top R-rated female comedy ever, overtaking "Sex and the City," Universal Studios said Monday.
The movie starring and co-written by Kristen Wiig took in $152.9 million in the United States through Sunday and was expected to close out the holiday weekend with $153.7 million, The Hollywood Reporter said.
"Sex and the City" reaped $152.6 million.
Universal says "Bridesmaids" is its biggest romantic comedy ever, and the seventh most profitable romantic comedy of all time, as measured by the tracking service Cinesys.
It is also the top-grossing film for producer and director Judd Apatow, surpassing his "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" and "Knocked Up."
"Bridesmaids" also stars Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Ellie Kemper and Wendi McLendon-Covey.
