NEW YORK, May 24 (UPI) -- Current TV says U.S. documentarian Morgan Spurlock is to serve as host of its new series, "50 Documentaries to See Before You Die."

The show, set to debut on the cable network Aug. 1, will examine "how, over the last quarter-century, the documentary feature has evolved into an increasingly mainstream genre, becoming a major box-office draw and impacting society and contemporary American culture in ways never seen before," Current TV said in a news release Tuesday.

The five 1-hour episodes will count down 50 of the modern documentary era's most powerful, provocative and moving films, the network said.

Among those to be featured are the films "Roger & Me," "The Thin Blue Line," "Catfish," "Inside Job," "March of the Penguins" and "Hoop Dreams."

Spurlock's films include "Super Size Me," "Where in the World is Osama bin Laden?" and "Freakonomics."
