'Tree of Life' wins Palme d'Or

CANNES, France, May 23 (UPI) -- Director Terrence Malick's "The Tree of Life," starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn, has won the Cannes film festival's Palme d'Or top prize.

Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn won the Best Director award for his movie "Drive," Hollywood's Kirsten Dunst took home the Best Actress prize for her performance in "Melancholia" and France's Jean Dujardin won the Best Actor honor for his work in "The Artist," it was announced Sunday.

"Polisse" earned the Jury Prize, and "The Kid With a Bike" and "Once Upon a Time in Anatolia" tied for the Grand Prix distinction, The Hollywood Reporter said.

French actress Melanie Laurent was host of the awards ceremony.
