LOS ANGELES, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- U.S. actress and former pinup girl Jane Russell died Monday at her home in Santa Maria, Calif., her son said. She was 89.

Her son, Buck Waterfield, did not disclose the cause of death, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Born Ernestine Jane Geraldine Russell in Bemidji, Minn., the actress is famous for her work in the films "The Outlaw," "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes," and "The Pale Face."

Her screen credits also include "Gentlemen Marry Brunettes," "The Revolt of Mamie Stover," "Young Widow," "His Kind of Woman," "The Las Vegas Story," "The French Line," "The Fuzzy Pink Night Gown," "Fate Is the Hunter," "Born Losers" and "Darker Than Amber."

Russell also was well-known in the 1970s as a spokesmodel for Playtex bras, starring in TV commercials for the "Cross Your Heart" bra campaign.

She was active in several charities, The Hollywood Reporter said.
