WASHINGTON, Nov. 30 (UPI) -- Washington's National Portrait Gallery says it has removed from an exhibit a 4-minute video depicting an artist as Jesus Christ with ants crawling over him.
The work by the late artist David Wojnarowicz was yanked from "Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture" after detractors and legislators objected to its content, The Washington Post reported Tuesday. Described as the most expensive exhibition in the gallery's history, "Hide/Seek" opened Oct. 30 and is set to run through Feb. 13.
"Smithsonian officials should either acknowledge the mistake and correct it, or be prepared to face tough scrutiny beginning in January when the new majority in the House moves to end the job-killing spree in Washington," Kevin Smith, a spokesman for Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio, said in a statement issued to the Post.
