'Godfather' tops favorite film poll

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Hollywood's 1972 mob drama "The Godfather" and its 1974 sequel "The Godfather, Part II" ranked 1-2 on a Zagat Survey of the top films of all time.

The pollsters recently released "The World's Best Movies," a guide covering their top 1,000 movies of all time, based on the input of 20,773 moviegoers who voted on ZAGAT.com

"Casablanca" is No. 3 on the roster, "Schindler's List" is No. 4, "Lawrence of Arabia" is No. 5, "To Kill a Mockingbird" is No. 6, "Star Wars" is No. 7, "The Wizard of Oz" is No. 8, "Lady Eve" is No. 9 and "Singin' in the Rain" is No. 10.

"This new survey puts the ratings and reviews of over 20,000 avid moviegoers at your fingertips so that no matter what your age, sex or preference, there's an easy way to find the perfect film for every occasion," Tim Zagat, chief executive officer and co-founder of Zagat Survey, said in a statement Wednesday. "In fact, this collection of 1,000 movies is really 'the stuff that dreams are made of.'"

Topping the survey in the action/adventure category is "Lawrence of Arabia." No. 1 on the Americana list is "To Kill a Mockingbird," while "Finding Nemo" was named the best animated film, "Man for All Seasons" best biography, "Wizard of Oz" best family movie, "Some Like It Hot" best comedy, "The Godfather" best crime film, "Star Wars" best cult movie, "The Godfather, Part II" best drama, "All About Eve" best dramedy, "Bridge on the River Kwai" best epic, "Lord of the Rings/Return of the King" best fantasy movie, "Third Man" best film noir, "The Exorcist" best horror flick, "Singin' in the Rain" best musical, "Casablanca" best romance, "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial" best science-fiction movie, "Rear Window" best thriller, "Schindler's List" best war film and "High Noon" best western.

Surveyors named Cary Grant their all-time favorite actor, with Johnny Depp and George Clooney coming in second and third, respectively. Meryl Streep is the surveyors' favorite leading lady. Following Streep are Sandra Bullock and Katharine Hepburn. The all-time favorite director is Steven Spielberg, followed in order by Martin Scorsese and Alfred Hitchcock, the Zagat Survey found.
