LOS ANGELES, July 8 (UPI) -- Lindsay Lohan says she wasn't trying to make a statement when she appeared in a Los Angeles court this week with an expletive visible on her fingernail.

Beverly Hills, Calif., Judge Marsha Revel sentenced Lohan Tuesday to 90 days in jail and 90 days of in-patient rehabilitation for violating probation.

Revel said Lohan failed to attend court-ordered alcohol education classes, thereby violating her probation in a 2007 conviction for driving under the influence.

A close-up photo taken in court of Lohan's middle finger, which clearly shows the words "F--- U" scrawled on the nail, was widely published after the hearing.

"Didn't we do our nails as a joke with our friend?" People.com quoted Lohan as saying via Twitter to a friend Wednesday. "It had nothing to do w/court. It's an airbrush design from a stencil."

Lohan, 24, is best known for her roles in the movies "Mean Girls," "Freaky Friday" and "The Parent Trap."

She is scheduled to surrender July 20 to begin serving her sentence at the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood.
