'Twilight' vampires are No. 1

LOS ANGELES, July 5 (UPI) -- The vampire movie "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" opened at No. 1 in U.S. theaters this Independence Day weekend, Box Office Mojo said Monday.

Moviegoers plunked down an estimated $69 million to see the latest installment of the vampire series directed by David Slade.

Another new movie, "The Last Airbender," a fantasy adventure from writer-director M. Night Shyamalan, opened at No. 2, taking in an estimated $40.5 million.

"Toy Story 3," which held the top spot the past two weeks, fell to No. 3 with an estimated $30.2 million in ticket sales, bringing its three-week total to $289 million.

Also moving down two positions were: "Grownups," $19.1 million; "Knight & Day," $10.4 million; "The Karate Kid," $8.1 million; "The A-Team," $3.15 million; "Get Him to the Greek," $1.25 million; and "Shrek Forever After," $847,000. "Cyrus," an indie comedy co-written and directed by Jay and Mark Duplass, that moved up from 20th to 10th with $774,000 in estimated ticket sales.

Falling out of the top tier were "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," "Killers" and "Jonah Hex."
