NEW YORK, June 29 (UPI) -- U.S. actor Rob Lowe is working on a memoir called "Stories I Only Tell My Friends," said publisher Henry Holt and Co., which expects to release it next May.

E! News said Lowe is writing the book himself, instead of dictating his story to a ghostwriter as some celebrities do.

The memoir is being described as a "mid-career meditation on his four decades as an actor," E! News said.

Lowe, 46, enjoyed heartthrob status after starring in a string of 1980s movies such as "The Outsiders," "Oxford Blues," "St. Elmo's Fire" and "About Last Night ..." He later appeared in big-screen comedies such as "Wayne's World" and the Austin Powers franchise. In more recent years, he has worked in the celebrated TV dramas "The West Wing" and "Brothers & Sisters."

Despite his career successes, Lowe has also had his share of scandals, most notably when he appeared on a sex tape with two women, one of whom was under age, in 1988. He insisted he did not know the girl was 16 because he met her at a bar, a fact that was later confirmed.

He also recently ended legal battles with domestic staff who accused him and his wife of sexual harassment.
