'Avatar' wins big at Empire Awards

LONDON, March 29 (UPI) -- "Avatar" was named best picture at the Empire Film Awards ceremony in London Sunday night, organizers said.

The international blockbuster also earned prizes for director James Cameron and star Zoe Saldana, who won the best actress accolade, the BBC said.

Ian McKellen, whose film credits include the "Lord of the Rings" and "X-Men" trilogies, was presented with the Empire Icon award. Christoph Waltz won the trophy for best actor for his work in "Inglourious Basterds."

"Star Trek" won the gong for best sci-fi/fantasy film and "Sherlock Holmes" was named best thriller, "Harry Brown" best British film, "In the Loop" best comedy and "Let the Right One In" best horror movie, the BBC said.
