LONDON, March 27 (UPI) -- "Motherhood," starring Uma Thurman, which flopped in the United States, did even worse in Britain, attracting only 12 viewers on its first weekend.

Ticket sales came to 88 pounds ($131), the Daily Mail reported Saturday, with only one person in the audience when it opened last Sunday. "Motherhood" brought in $50,000 on its first weekend in the United States in October, BoxOfficeMojo.com reported.

The film's poor British showing startled the producer, Jane Edelbaum: "You're kidding? We must have broken a new record for grosses!"

"Motherhood," which features Thurman as a woman trying to finish a writing project and hold a birthday party for one of her children, has been poorly reviewed on both sides of the Atlantic. But Barry Norman, one of Britain's best-known critics, said he was still surprised the movie did so badly.

"Good God. I have never heard of anything like this before," he said. "This is not some small, independent movie. It's astonishing that only about 11 people could be bothered to go and see Uma Thurman."

The movie cost about $5 million to make. Edelbaum was defensive about it, calling it a "very decent movie."
